This battle at the bottom of the table could not be any tighter at the moment and the matches from Gameweek 25 in the Premier League had plenty of implications on the relegation zone. There were plenty of draws with Swansea City winning to move within a point to jump out of the relegation zone for the first time since early November.
The last two matches for the Swans have been exciting and crucial in a chance for survival. After beating Liverpool about a week ago, Swansea City beat Arsenal 3-1 Tuesday. Nacho Monreal scored first to give the Gunners the lead in the 33rd minute after a Mesut Özil cross found the Spaniard at the back post. Less than a minute later, Alfie Mawson slipped in Sam Clucas with a through pass and the Englishman converted to tie the score. Jordan Ayew scored just past the hour mark to give the Swans the lead for good. An error by Petr Čech on a clearance allowed Ayew to slot home from close range. Clucas sealed the win with a brace in the 86th minute when he pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired home. The Swans came off the bottom position for the first time in nearly two months. Arsenal is still sixth.
West Bromwich Albion moved to the bottom of the table after the club lost 3-0 to Manchester City Wednesday. The Baggies didn’t have much of a chance against the league leaders at the Etihad Stadium and Fernandinho started the scoring for the Citizens on 19 minutes. Kevin De Bruyne, who assisted on the opener, doubled the lead in the 68th minute. Sergio Agüero capped the scoring with a goal one minute form added time. West Brom has just 20 points to be last at the moment.
Southampton is one point inside the drop
Southampton and Brighton and Hove Albion battled to a 1-1 draw with each club earning a point in a bid for survival. The Seagulls earned a penalty when Solly March was dragged down in the box in the opening 15 minutes. Glenn Murray dispatched the penalty to the right corner past Alex McCarthy, who was diving the other way. Jack Stephens equalized for the Saints in the 64th minute on an inventive finish. James Ward-Prowse struck a low set piece from the left wing. After a deflection, Stephans turned the ball with his left foot and it found the inside of the post. Southampton is one point inside the drop while Brighton and Hove Albion is on 24 points, which is the same as three other sides.
Huddersfield Town lost while Newcastle United and Stoke City drew to make up the other three teams with 24 points. The Terriers fell 3-0 to Liverpool Tuesday with Emre Can, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah each notching goals in the win. Stoke City played out a goalless draw with Watford Wednesday. Newcastle drew 1-1 with Burnley when a Karl Darlow own goal in the 85th minute canceled out a Jamaal Lascelles opener just 20 minutes earlier.
